Save Money by Using Vinegar EVERYWHERE in Your House

Vinegar has been around thousands upon thousands of years, being noted as early as 3000 BC. We use it in salad dressings, to clean our coffee pots, and as a standard household cleaner. But did you know just how many uses vinegar has? Being available for only a few dollars a bottle, vinegar is one of the cheapest, versatile, and earth-friendly home remedies and cleansers available.

As a Household Cleaner:
  • Make a standard household cleaner by mixing 1 part vinegar and 9 parts water and adding to a spray bottle. This will kill most germs and is safe around kids and pets.
  • Coffee pot cleaner. We use our coffee maker multiple times each day, so a few times a month we run vinegar through to remove any deposits and clean the pot for fresher tasting coffee. Run a pot of straight vinegar through, followed by two or three cycles of water to rinse out all remaining vinegar.
  • Car deodorizer. Leave a bowl of white, distilled vinegar open overnight in your car. This will remove any odors.
  • Food stain remover. The next time your hands are stained by berries or other dark foods, rinse them with white vinegar, which will remove any pigment on your hands.
  • Clean lime buildup off of chrome fixtures. According to www.vinegartips.com, use a paste made of 2 tablespoons salt and 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar.
  • Clean your garbage disposal. Pour a cup of vinegar down the disposal, let sit for a few minutes, and then run. My husband and I also like to add ice cubes while the disposal is running (for added abrasive cleansing power) and follow it up with orange peels to give the disposal (and kitchen) a pleasant smell.
  • Clean tile grout. Let full-strength white distilled vinegar sit on it for a few minutes and scrub it with an old toothbrush.
  • Get urine stains and odors out of mattresses. Whether left by pets or children, these are gross. First, blot the stain to remove all urine. Then clean the soiled area with white vinegar. Sprinkle with baking soda and let dry overnight, vacuuming up in the morning.

As a Homeopathic Remedy:
  • Fight foot odor by soaking feet in vinegar.
  • Ease a sore throat by gargling 1 teaspoon of vinegar diluted with 8 ounces of water.
  • Take the heat out of sunburn by using a vinegar compress (a washcloth soaked in vinegar).
  • Fight jellyfish stings. I've heard varying accounts, but if you live in an area where jellyfish stings are a threat, bring a bottle of vinegar with you to the beach. The acetic acid in vinegar is said to stop the release of venom after a jellyfish sting.
  • Fight the itch of bug bites by applying a cotton ball soaked in vinegar.
  • Fight under-arm odor by dabbing yourself with apple cider vinegar, which should inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria.

This list doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the number of uses for vinegar. For more tips, check out www.vinegartips.com and DiscoveryHealth.com.

    Free Eyeglasses from CoastalContacts.com

I ventured out my snow-covered front door this morning to retrieve the paper, but before I even spotted the paper I was beyond excitement to see that my new glasses from CoastalContacts.com were hanging from my doorknob!

Besides the fact that I'm absolutely SMITTEN with my new specs, the best part was that I paid only $15.37 for them. That's right—a brand-new pair of prescription eyeglasses for the cost of only shipping and tax. You, too can have prescription eyeglasses virtually for free, if you get on the ball now!

    • Like Coastal Contacts on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/CoastalContacts.com
    • Click on the "Free Glasses" link below the image on the left
    • You will be taken to a page with information on when the next giveaway begins and for which states.
    • Using the code you receive, shop www.coastalcontacts.com, using your most recent glasses prescription (they even provide handy, printable measuring charts for eye distance).
    • When the code is valid, shop away!
You may end up paying a tad more for certain styles of lenses (such as progressives, bifocals, or anti-glare coatings), but the basic lenses are free. Even if you do end up paying for your lenses,  the cost is cheaper than at a regular optometrist and the frames are still free.

I was even upgraded to free VIP shipping, which means that my glasses were shipped on Friday and arrived this morning; I could not be happier with the product or the service I received.

So, get on it, and you, too, could be rocking some new specs for FREE!

A Free and Crafty Valentine's Mixed CD

Who says mixed tapes (yeah, yeah, yeah, they're called CDs now, I know) are passe? If you are looking for a heartfelt, creative, crafty, and free gift to give that someone special, how about making a mixed CD?

This is the fourth Valentine's Day that my husband and I have spent together, and while I've made him mixed CDs before, I haven't made one like this. I had the CD case and blank CD, so there was no cost there, and all the songs I put on my playlist I already had, so again, no cost. I did some crafty scrapbook-like designs with cutouts from various old magazines I had around with sayings and images that were important to our relationship.
For the playlist, I selected songs that were romantic without being overly sappy, as well as a few that hold special meaning to us:
    1. Band of Horses, "No One's Gonna Love You"
    2. Bibio, "Lover's Carvings" (you may recognize this song from an Amazon Kindle commercial)
    3. Bon Iver, "Skinny Love"
    4. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, "Home"
    5. The Fruit Bats, "When You Love Somebody"
    6. Graham Coxon, "See a Better Day"
    7. Keren Ann, "Greatest You Can Find"
    8. Lady Antebellum, "Need You Now"
    9. Let's Go Sailing, "All I Want from You is Love"
    10. Lifehouse, "Everything"
    11. The Moldy Peaches, "Anyone Else But You"
    12. Mr. Big, "To Be With You"
    13. Patrick Park, "Your Smile Is a Drug"
    14. Pete Yorn, "Girl Like You"
    15. The Proclaimers, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"
    16. The Postal Service, "Brand New Colony"
    17. Train, "Hey, Soul Sister"
    18. The White Stripes, "Fell in Love with a Girl"

For those looking for inspiration, Amazon.com has songs #1 (Band of Horses), #2 (Bibio), and #5 (The Fruit Bats) available for FREE DOWNLOAD, as well as a pre-made FREE Valentine's playlist available  (I must say I would have been more excited with this discovery if I didn't already have them on my computer :) But go, and download away!

    Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Where To Find Free (Legal) Mp3s Online

At $0.99 a pop, it is easy for many of us to get carried away with mp3 purchases, whether it be through iTunes, Amazon.com, or any other service. There are, however, several sites that allow you to peruse and download mp3 music files for FREE (and within the constraints of the law).

    • Amazon.com: My favorite site has to be Amazon.com; Amazon has literally thousands of free mp3s on their site at any given time. Simply navigate to their site, click on "Movies, Music & Games" in the left navigation panel and scroll down to click on "Mp3 Downloads," and then find "Free Songs & Special Deals" under "Categories" in the left column. Many up-and-coming artists will be featured here, as well as more established artists. (Another, easier way would be just to click here.) You can find something new to listen to (and maybe splurge on a .99 purchase or two :) Currently, Amazon is also offering a free $2 credit (which will purchase two mp3s) as a Valentine's promotion.
    • iTunes likewise offers a variety of free mp3 downloads. When you open iTunes on your computer, open the iTunes store (left column), and then click on "Music" on the top navigational panel. When the next page opens, the right side of the window will have "quick links," the top one being for a list of "Free on iTunes." Here you can browse all of the free music (as well as all the other free content) that iTunes has available.
    • Another great site for free mp3 downloads is RCRD LBL (http://rcrdlbl.com/). RCRD LBL has free downloads from both new and established artists, and you can also browse to find a new band or new song to listen to. Visit daily, as the site is updated often.
    • Make friends with music bloggers. My friend from college runs one of the best music blogs around, Mixtapes | Heartbreaks. She does a fabulous job of keeping me informed on new artists (and jealous of her concert exploits :), and she offers a large number of downloadable mp3s and playlists. Jonk Music is another good site, giving you a song each day from somewhere around the Web (though these are only streaming, you get a nice preview before you decide to buy the song elsewhere).
    •  MySpace. Though I will admit to loathing MySpace, many bands find a home there, and many do offer links to their music downloads as a way of garnering a fan base. This was how I discovered (and downloaded some free) Pomplamoose.
Though not downloading, there are also many streaming sites that I love, putting together the perfect playlists to get me through my day. Playlist.com and Pandora.com are two of the better ones I've found.

Undoubtedly, I'm missing a few (or a few thousand) sites that give away mp3s. What did I miss?
