How to Save Money on Your Holiday Travel

The pumpkins have been put away, the trees are letting loose their leaves of gold and red, and the clouds threaten their first snow: it's officially the holiday season, when we often travel to spend time with family and friends.

Regardless of how you get there (by plane, train, or automobile), holiday travel is expensive. Here are some ways save when planning your holiday travels.

If flying:
There are many ways to cut back on airline expenses, including:
  • Use a rewards program. Using a rewards program or frequent flyer program can get you a return on the money you spend on airfare.
  • Be flexible in your dates. Oftentimes, you can snag better deals when you stay over the weekend or avoid the busiest travel days (such as the day after Thanksgiving).
  • Plan ahead. You can usually save a great deal of money by booking far in advance of your travel date.
  • Consider a connecting flight. Though often a pain, flights that have a connection between your departure city and arrival city will generally be cheaper than those that fly direct.
  • Be familiar with fees. Many airlines charge hefty fees for checking bags, among other things. If you can travel with a small bag that can be carried on the plane, you will save yourself upwards of $30 per flight. Familiarize yourself with the carry-on regulations for each airline you are considering and pick the best fit. If you do choose to carry on a bag, make sure it falls within the airline's size and weight regulations.
  • Compare rates. By comparing the rates listed by various airlines, you can select which has the lowest airfare and related fees. Additionally, using a site like Expedia or Travelocity compares rates for you, and you can also save money with these sites by bundling hotel and car rentals into your travel package.
  • Use social media. By following different airlines, travel agents, or travel sites via Twitter or Facebook, you can be notified of the best deals as soon as they are available.
If driving:
Gas is (in general) the biggest expense when driving long distances. Here are a few ways to save on gas and other car-related expenses during holiday travels:
  • Plan ahead. Planning your route ahead of time can help you map out major cities where you can fuel up (gas is often less expensive in larger cities than their surrounding rural areas, due to supply and demand. Better to fill up for a cheaper price in the city than be forced to pay more forty miles out when you run out of gas).
  • Use price comparison websites or apps. There are several available apps and websites (including GasPriceWatch.com) that will tell you the price of gas at several nearby stations.
  • Beware gas stations nearest the highway. Gas is often most expensive nearest a highway exit/entrance, as you are paying for the convenience of not having to search out another station further into town. That said, if there are two or more stations very close to each other (even near a highway exit), you will likely get a good price because of the competition.
  • Perform necessary car repairs. Even small things like changing your oil can save you big money on gas mileage; the harder your car's engine has to work, the less fuel economy you will have.
  • Use the cruise. Assuming road conditions permit, using your car's cruise control will keep your car at a perfectly steady speed, increasing your gas mileage (and reducing the likelihood of leg cramps).
  • Get cash back. If you use a credit card, consider using one that provides points or cash back on fuel purchases. See my list of the 6 best credit cards for rewards for more information.
  • Bring your own snacks. Packing a cooler with water, soda, and snacks will not only satisfy everyone in the car (so you're less likely to hear cries of "I'm hungry!" coming from the back seat) but you'll also save money by not making impulse stops at fast food locations along the way. Bonus? The snacks you bring are very likely to be much healthier than what you'd find at a drive through.
If taking the train:
I will admit upfront, the only trains I've ridden were scenic. That said, I do know that there are some great deals to be had if you decide to take the train for long-distance travel.
  • Look for discount codes. According to TrainTicketUSA.comAmtrak often provides discount codes online for their fares. Doing a bit of research ahead of time could save you some cash.
  • Book in advance. Just as with airfare, the best deals are typically to be had well in advance of your departure date.
  • Bring your own snacks. As with driving and flying, bringing your own food will be cheaper than purchasing what is offered during your trip.
  • Take advantage of deals. According to eHow.com, Amtrak offers discounts to AAA members, senior citizens, veterans, students, active military personnel, children, and others. Like using these discounts in other places, you will likely need to ask for it up front.
Safe and happy travels!

DIY: Save Money by Making Your Own Jewelry

I spent years when I was younger in craft stores, buying beads, embroidery floss, clasps, and other jewelry-making implements. Somewhere along the line, though, my enthusiasm waned and life became too hectic for jewelry-making. Recently I've been on a kick to add some "oomph" to my wardrobe, and jewelry is a relatively cheap and easy way to do that.

But as I've purchased necklaces and earrings that look fabulous for anywhere between $10-$20 (with my thrifty nature, I refuse to spend any more than that on jewelry), I've noticed that they look an awful lot like the ones I used to make. And, you guessed it, I'm now back on craft store patrol (I've found that Wal-Mart also has a good selection with reasonable prices) for beads and other items.

What I've found: for about $5, you can make your own jewelry to your specific taste. It's an incredibly relaxing activity, as well, since you are focusing on the task at hand and not the other three thousand things you think you should be doing.

What you need:
-Beads, appliques, or other jewels (I found each of the main pieces I used at Wal-Mart for $3 each; the vials of small glass beads were $2.50 each)
-Clasps, findings, or other connectors (I spent $3.99 for a bag of 6 sets of findings and $2.99 for earring findings, also a set of 6)
-Some sort of cord on which to place the beads/jewels. I use fishing line because it is very strong while being very thin, which makes it ideal for the tiny glass beads I like to use. (Price: free, since my husband keeps a large supply of fishing line in our garage.)
-An idea! Just a quick stroll down the jewelry section in any store is enough to provide you with tons of ideas.

Most of the pieces I purchased had ideas on the inside, and there are several websites that are great resources as well. I like:
I know there are literally thousands of great craft, DIY, and beading/jewelry-making blogs and site, so I know I'm missing a ton. Leave a comment to let me know who/what I'm missing!

How to Save Money on Air Conditioning

The dog days of summer are here; for the past four weeks or so, much of the nation has been suffering with high temps, high humidity, and high heat indexes. Thank God for air conditioning, right?

Though literally (and metaphorically) a life-saver, air conditioning does some severe damage to summertime energy bills (according to MSN.com, the average American home spends 17%—about $375—on summer cooling). How can you save money while still being comfy and cool?

Here are a few ways to save money on air conditioning:
1. Adjust the temperature. To me, this is a no-brainer. A programmable thermostat (or even just remembering to adjust the temp before you leave the house for the day) can save a lot of money in the long run. After all, you won't be home to notice if it is cool or not. According to MSN, you should aim for 78 degrees when home, and adjust up and down a few degrees accordingly when you leave and return home.

2. Use only when necessary. My husband and I live in Minnesota, which means that we spend a good 6 months out of the year boxed inside our home with the furnace on high. Come summer, I want the windows open and to relish the fact that I finally feel warm. We generally turn our central air on only when daytime temperatures are 90 or above (or when the night-time low isn't predicted to get below about 75, where we keep our thermostat set). I've been told, however, that because the air conditioning unit needs time and energy to cool down the house when warm (and about 24 hours to remove all humidity), it should be turned on at night (when it is cooler and the unit won't need to work as hard to cool the house), and it should not be turned off/on daily, as this uses more energy than simply letting it run. Aim to use it during the hottest weeks and go without during the weeks when you are able.

3. Buy EnergyStar appliances. An EnergyStar window unit or central air conditioning will not only use less energy than other models (10% and 14%, respectively). You may also qualify for a tax break at the end of the year for any EnergyStar appliances you purchase. MSN has a list of which EnergyStar AC models will use 25% less energy (or more) than standard models, and also suggests visiting the EnergyStar website to compare models before you purchase.

4. Close the windows and shut the curtains. To me this is another "duh," but if the air conditioning is on, the windows should be shut (and locked, to maximize the tightness of the seal). (With my husband in and out of screen door to the deck for summertime grilling, I've uttered the phrase "I'm not paying to cool the outdoors" more than once.)  That said, I'm guilty of leaving the curtains and window shades open (I love my sun and natural light!). My husband is great about shutting the shades on south-facing windows during the day, and opening them as the sun moves overhead. The sun heats up the house quite a bit, and reflecting off of a dark deck or an asphalt driveway can add even more heat before it enters your house; the shades keep out some of the sun, helping to keep your house cool. Yahoo! recommends putting a plant near windows, as well, to absorb some of the extra sunlight as it enters your house.

5. Sign up for a Saver Switch. Many energy companies have what are called "saver switches" or something similar; these devices are hooked up to your central air conditioning unit, and when temps get high and energy usage goes up across your area, the saver switch will automatically raise your thermostat a few degrees. This saves energy, saves you money, prevents rolling brownouts or blackouts, and is highly unnoticeable (we have had ours for the past three years, and this summer was the first time we noticed it in use). As a bonus, it will save you money on your bill, and, BIG BONUS, you will get a discount on your energy bill during the summer months. Here in the Midwest we have Xcel energy, which gives us a 15% discount on our bill each month during the summer (I believe for other states they service they offer a discount of $50 on the October bill). Check with your energy provider to determine which programs and rebates they offer.

5 More Easy Ways to Get Rid of Indoor Bugs

A few weeks ago I posted some recipes for frugal, green, DIY pest control. Now, FNC iMag has provided 5 more easy ways to get rid of indoor bugs, all of which happen to be easy, cheap, and green.

  1. Get rid of standing water. (This includes recycling, garbage, and glasses of liquid; mosquitoes especially prefer to breed in standing water.)
  2. For ants, spray white vinegar around door and window frames. (Ants don’t like the smell of vinegar.)
  3. Put out a small dish of white wine. (Fruit flies are attracted to sweet things, so better to have them in a small dish of wine on the counter than in your plants and fruits.)
  4. Instead of buying moth crystals or moth balls, hang chalk in your closet.
  5. To keep roaches at bay, peel a cucumber. (Place the peels on the kitchen counter or by the tub to deter roaches.)

5 Recipes for DIY, Green, and Frugal Pest Control

Summer is officially here, which means that bugs of all persuasions (let's take a moment and shudder a collective ick) are out in full force. Most bug repellents and pest control sprays are laden with chemicals (and unsafe to use by kids and pets) and fall on the pricey side. Whole Living magazine included 5 recipes in their June 2011 issue for do-it-yourself, homemade repellents.

For Ants:
  • 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tbsp Borax
Sprinkle in kitchens and bathrooms (alas, this one must be kept away from kids and pets, however).

For Bedbugs:
  • 1 tsp of peppermint oil
  • 1 tsp of rosemary oil
  • 2 cups of water
Spray on the mattress and the floor surrounding the bed. (To me this sounds like the perfect aromatherapy mix for the bedroom, too!)

For Flies:
  • Cloves
  • Eucalyptus
  • Clover blossom
Tie in a sachet and hang from the ceiling.

For Mice:
  • 1 tbsp peppermint castile soap
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne
  • 8 cups of water
Spray along the baseboards in your house.

For Roaches:
  • 2 tsp of tea tree oil
  • 2 cups of water
Spray in kitchens and bathrooms.

For a list of store-bought, non-toxic pest repellents, visit www.wholeliving.com.

CVS Deals Rock!

On Sunday, I went to CVS to get a pack of cigarettes (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know), allergy medicine, and lip balm. As is my ritual, I always scan my ExtraCare card to see what coupon goodies are waiting for me. This time? A coupon for $4 off a purchase of $20 or more and a coupon for $3 off a cosmetics purchase totaling $10 or more. (I also had a coupon for $1 off L'Oreal hair color, but I'm waiting to use that one later.) Since I did need new eyeliner (though my husband might debate that necessity), I decided to use my coupons.

My purchases:
CVS-brand Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride (generic Benadryl): Price $4.69
Camel menthol cigarettes: Price $5.19
Blistex lip balm: Price $1.67
Revlon ColorStay eyeliner: Price $7.79
Revlon ColorStay eyeshadow: Price $7.29

Total: $26.63 plus tax
Coupon total: $7.00
Total Spent: $20.42

I also got $4 in ExtraBucks to be used by July 6, so I suppose I could argue that I truly only paid $16.42 for my loot :)

Yay for CVS!

Free Pet Safety Pack from ASPCA

A fabulous find I stumbled across while searching for which plants are toxic to cats. The ASPCA has a free pet safety pack, which includes a window decal (which, in case of emergency, alerts rescue personnel that pets are inside your home) and an ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center magnet (so you've got the correct numbers and websites handy in case your fur children get into something they shouldn't have).

5 Best Frequent Flyer Programs

I've blogged before about 8 ways you can save money if you choose to use credit cards; one of my tips was to choose the credit card with the best rewards program for your spending style, including frequent flyer miles. Now Money.cnn.com has put out a list of the "Best Frequent Flyer Programs." Their list includes:

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards. Southwest debuted a new and improved Rapid Rewards program on March 1, where points are earned according to the price of the ticket and its seat class (members earn 12 points for every $1 on business fares and 10 points for every $1 on anytime fares). Those points can be redeemed for Southwest flights as well as rental cars, hotels and gift cards for Amazon or iTunes. Earn 35,000 points or more and score an upgrade to A-list status, which means priority boarding and priority check-in and security lane access.

  • JetBlue TrueBlue. About a year ago, TrueBlue got a makeover with some major improvements. Most importantly, the program did away with blackout dates and point expirations altogether. Now, members can redeem their points for any seat on any flight with at least 5,000 points for a one-way and 10,000 points for a round-trip ticket. Users get six points for every dollar spent on a flight at jetblue.com but can also accumulate points on purchases from a JetBlue partner. For example: join Netflix and earn an easy 1,500 TrueBlue points right there.

  • Delta SkyMiles. Members earn SkyMiles according to how far they fly, rather than to how many dollars they spend. And because Delta is a larger carrier, earning miles is easier because there are so many more partner companies, from FedEx to Fidelity, that offer ways to get bonus miles with everyday purchases. Delta also recently implemented a new policy eliminating its mileage expiration, so members can use their miles at any time.

  • Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. Alaska Airlines has one of the best frequent flyer plans on the market, even for travelers that live far from its hub. Members from all 50 states earn miles every time they fly Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, or any one of its airline partners, which include Air France, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and British Airways. Like the larger carrier programs, users earn miles according to how many miles you fly (rather than how many dollars you spend). A domestic round-trip fare starts at 25,000 miles, but members get 500 bonus miles just for signing up and miles don't expire as long as your account is active within a two-year period. Members can also redeem their miles for trips on any of the many partner airlines as well.

  • Virgin America Elevate. Users earn five points for every dollar spent on Virgin flights but can accumulate points in more fun ways as well. For example, join Gilt Groupe and get 500 points with your first purchase or earn 25 free points simply by "checking-in" using Facebook, Foursquare or Twitter at a Virgin America terminal, gate or baggage claim. With as few as 2,500 points, users start flying free. There are also no blackout dates or restrictions on reward flights and miles don't expire as long as your account is active within an 18 month period.

Earn Money and Rewards with (Legit!) Online Surveys

Many people dream of earning easy money from their home (preferably while sitting on the couch, in pajamas....you get the idea :) While there are plenty of scams out there (note: anything legitimate will not require you to pay anything to get started), there are a lot of sites that let you earn money and rewards for taking surveys. Yep, that's it. Say what you do and how you feel, and get paid!

So which sites are the legit online surveys? The ones with which I am most familiar—generally through my own participation—are below, and can be verified through programs such as VeriSign and the Better Business Bureau (both of which are good signs for security). All survey programs listed below are FREE to join and certified by the BBB or another secure, best-practices business.

  • SwagBucks.com:   I've blogged before about SwagBucks and the many ways to earn, from simply using their search engine to search the Web (which, let's face it, you're going to do anyway) to completing surveys, printing coupons, and participating in discussions. Each survey is usually worth between 50 and 150 SwagBucks (depending on how time-consuming, etc.), which can then be cashed in for gift cards, electronics, mp3 downloads, and a ton of more stuff. And if you screen out of the survey? Don't worry—you are automatically entered into a daily sweepstakes (one entry for each survey you screen out of each day) to win 1,000 SwagBucks.

  • GlobalTestMarket.com: GlobalTestMarket is another one of my favorites. Verified by the Better Business Bureau (the logo is prominently placed on their site), GlobalTestMarket emails survey invitations when they are available. For each survey you complete, you earn MarketPoints (each MarketPoint has a value of $.05 cents); most surveys start around 35 or 40 MarketPoints ($3.50 to $4.00 each). Once you reach 1,000 market points, you can cash in and be mailed a $50 check (or,  you can keep accumulating, and cash out for even more). For each survey you are screened out of and unable to complete, you are entered into the daily drawing for $300 and monthly drawings for larger cash prizes.
  • ValuedOpinions.com: ValuedOpinions is another great survey site. Also accredited by the Better Business Bureau (again, the logo is prominently displayed on their site),  you will be emailed survey invitations, which range in compensation from $1.00 to $7.00 or $8.00 (depending on survey requirements). Once you reach a balance $20, you can cash in for a $20 gift card to any number of retailers, including Amazon.com and Macy's. They also offer a sweepstakes that you are entered into for signing up; the current sign-up sweepstakes is for an Apple iPad.
  • Synovate Global Opinions Panels: Global Opinions works much in the same way as GlobalTestMarket.com and ValuedOpinions.com, in that you are emailed survey invitations when they have a survey matched to your profile. They differ in that instead of awarding compensation for each survey completed, you are instead entered into the sweepstakes. Each month on the 15th $5,000 worth of prizes (cash included) are given away to a total of 200 winners.  A CASRO member, they subscribe to the Code of Standards and Ethics for Survey Research established by the Council of American Survey Research Organizations.

Spinner.com: A Great Site for Free Mp3s

I've posted previously about where to find free (legal) mp3 files online. I've now been introduced to another site that offers a free mp3 file daily and archives all previous free downloads: www.spinner.com. Now run by AOL, this site is a great repository all sorts of music information, including free music downloads from independent and alternative musicians and bands. My first few finds? Free mp3s from MGMT, Fleet Foxes, this year's Coachella performers, Obits, and Jeremy Messersmith.

Visit www.spinner.com today and start downloading!
